Umami Burger

The first Umami Burger location opened up in 2009 on La Brea Avenue by a print shop and since then they have opened up all across California as well as in Las Vegas, Miami, and New York.

Umami (pronounced “ooh mommy!”) is a Japanese adjective that describes the “fifth” sense of taste beyond the normal sweet, sour, salty, and bitter. It technically refers to a taste sensation that is brought on by a meaty and savory taste.

While Umami Burger uses a Japanese word in its name and the Los Feliz location even has Japanese-themed interior design, it is not a Japanese restaurant but a burger joint. Either way, their delicious California-style burgers are indeed so meaty and savory that you may just exclaim “ooh mommy!” The only negative is that their burgers are a little on the small side so you may need to order two.

Try the burger that started it all, the Umami Burger consisting of a 6-ounce American Wagyu beef that is ground in-house and seasoned with a soy sauce marinade that is topped with a Parmesan crisp, shiitake mushroom, roasted tomato, caramelized onions and house ketchup held together by a Portuguese-style bun.

Also, each location has their own unique burger. Los Feliz’s Umami has the Carnitas Burger consisting of fresh ground pork, house-made carnitas, guajillo sauce, jalapeno sour cream, guacamole, tortilla crisps.

The Los Feliz location has a nice dog-friendly front patio with awnings that provide shade. They also serve beer!
